Honorary citizens of Hiroshima are announced

by Kanako Noda, Staff Writer

On September 2, it was learned that the City of Hiroshima is planning to grant the title of "Honorary Citizen of Hiroshima City" to Issey Miyake, 72, a fashion designer, and Yoko Morishita, 61, a ballerina. Both Issey Miyake and Yoko Morishita are highly regarded internationally for their work. The city will submit a bill calling for support for this selection at a regular meeting of the city assembly to convene on September 14.

Mr. Miyake is originally from Higashi Ward, Hiroshima. He has continued to create clothing on the cutting edge of the world of fashion. In 1998, he was named a person of Cultural Merit. He contributed an article to the New York Times in July 2009 in which he revealed his experience of the atomic bombing. His article, which also called on U.S. President Barack Obama to visit Hiroshima, was widely noted.

Ms. Morishita is originally from Naka Ward, Hiroshima. As a leading ballerina, she has won prizes both at home and abroad, including a gold medal at the Varna International Ballet Competition, and has played an active role on the world stage. In 1997, she was named a person of Cultural Merit. In 2001, she assumed the post of ballet mistress at the Matsuyama Ballet Company in Tokyo.

The City of Hiroshima has granted the title of honorary citizen to 18 individuals. Mr. Miyake and Ms. Morishita are set to receive the distinction for the first time since 2003, when Kaneto Shindo, a film director originally from Saeki Ward, Hiroyuki Agawa, a writer originally from Naka Ward, and Hiroo Inokuchi, a chemist originally from Minami Ward, were honored.
