On October 1, Masaaki Tanabe, 72, a resident of Hiroshima who recently visited Egypt and Kuwait as a “Special Communicator for a World without Nuclear Weapons,” reported on his mission to Yoshihiko Miyake, deputy mayor of the city, at Hiroshima City Hall. He shared the strong response generated by screenings of his documentary film that restores the appearance of the hypocenter area prior to the atomic bombing via computer animation. Mr. Tanabe spearheaded the creation of this film.

Mr. Tanabe visited the two countries from October 16 to 23. During this period, he presented the film and recounted his A-bomb experience at such occasions as the Hiroshima Japanese Film Festival 2010 held in Cairo by an organization affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

During his talk with Mr. Miyake, Mr. Tanabe related that some viewers shed tears during scenes in which A-bomb survivors speak about their experiences of losing family members to the blast.

Mr. Tanabe brought along on his trip a personal letter from Hiroshima Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba and Hiroshima Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki. According to Mr. Tanabe, the governor of Cairo proposed that a “peace park” be created within the city when making the announcement that Cairo will join Mayors for Peace.

Mr. Tanabe stressed the significance of conveying the true effects of the atomic bombing in the Middle East, a region that has suffered from continuous conflict, saying, “There was loud applause when I said at the film festival that the atomic bombing can never be justified.”
