On November 7, the Hiroshima Peace Center Foundation, chaired by Mamoru Tsuru, awarded the 22nd Kiyoshi Tanimoto Peace Prize to “Natsu no Kai” (“Summer Gathering”), a group of 16 actresses led by Tatsu Nakamura that performs recitation plays based on A-bomb accounts.

The award ceremony was carried out during the “Gathering for World Peace,” a Japanese speech contest for foreign students that was held on the Hiroshima campus of the Hiroshima Institute of Technology in the city center. Toshie Takada, 75, Misako Watanabe, 78, and Tomoe Hiiro, 69, attended the ceremony and received the award certificate, among other momentos, from Mr. Tsuru.

In place of delivering an acceptance speech, the three actresses performed their recitation play with students of Nagisa Koen Elementary School and Hiroshima Nagisa Junior High School in Saeki Ward. Following this performance, Ms. Takada read aloud the poem “Umashimenkana” (“We Shall Bring Forth New Life”), written by Sadako Kurihara, to riveting effect.

“As theater people of the A-bomb nation,” Ms. Watanabe said, “this prize will provide encouragement to continue our mission of conveying the atomic bombings.”

The group “Natsu no Kai” was established in 2008. The group has performed the recitation play “Natsu no Kumo wa Wasurenai: Hiroshima/Nagasaki 1945” (“The Summer Cloud Won’t Forget Hiroshima and Nagasaki of 1945”) across Japan. The Kiyoshi Tanimoto Peace Prize was instituted to preserve the legacy of the late Reverend Kiyoshi Tanimoto of Hiroshima Nagarekawa Church, who devoted himself to providing support to children whose parents perished in the atomic bombing.
