After Pope Leo XIV held his Inaugural Mass, Hiroshima Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki and Takashi Nakamoto, chairperson of the Hiroshima Prefecture Council, sent a letter by email to the Apostolic Nunciature in Japan on May 19 to offer their congratulations. They also requested the Pope visit the atomic-bombed city of Hiroshima.

In the letter, they explained that soon after his election as Pope, he had called on world leaders to work toward peace as soon as possible, which deeply impressed the people in the A-bombed city. Requesting he visit Hiroshima, they appealed him to deliver a message to promote a peaceful international community without nuclear weapons, while also learning the reality of the A-bombing.
