Association of doctors who are second-generation A-bomb survivors to be established

by Kei Kinugawa, Staff Writer

On February 4, it was learned that the Hiroshima Prefectural Medical Association will establish an association of doctors who are second-generation A-bomb survivors. The new association will play a role in conveying the horrific nature of the atomic bombing at the World Congress of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) to be held in Hiroshima in August 2012. The Prefectural Medical Association will solicit for supporters of the new association and will hold an organizational meeting within the month of March.

The association will be established as a subordinate body of the planning committee of the IPPNW World Congress. At the World Congress, which brings together doctors from all over the world, the horrific consequences of the bombing will be conveyed by the members of the new association. Behind this effort is the fact that doctors who survived the atomic bombing, and have played a major role in spearheading a campaign for nuclear abolition in the field of medicine, are aging. Last August, when it was decided that the IPPNW World Congress would be held in Hiroshima, the momentum to establish the new association grew among the second-generation doctors.

At the organizational meeting in March, the participants will listen to accounts of the atomic bombing shared by A-bombed doctors and, at a workshop, will study the genetic effects of the blast on second-generation A-bomb survivors and methods of treatment for A-bomb survivors.

Makoto Matsumura, 61, the executive director of the Hiroshima Prefectural Medical Association, whose mother is an A-bomb survivors, stressed: “As we ourselves are aware of the effects of the radiation released by the atomic bomb on the human body, we must continue to convey the true consequences of the atomic bombing to the next generation.”

The IPPNW World Congress will be held in Hiroshima for the first time in 23 years. The previous World Congress was held in the city in 1989. The World Congress will be held at the International Conference Center Hiroshima from August 24-26, 2012.
