Hiroshima Gas Propane Co., Ltd. (Kaita-cho, Hiroshima Prefecture) will begin supplying carbon-offset liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to the Flame of Peace in Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park on September 1 for the first time. The company will supply carbon-offset LPG to the City of Hiroshima, which has worked to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, until the end of March next year.
Hiroshima Gas Propane purchases LPG with carbon offsets from a distributor that procures CO2 emission credits generated from a hydroelectric plant in India. These credits offset the greenhouse gas emissions produced when the LPG is used. A total supply of 13 tons will reduce CO2 emissions by 43 tons.
Since last fiscal year, the company has supplied regular LPG to the Flame of Peace. It has increased its transaction volume of carbon-offset LPG by selling to companies, such as a taxi company in Hiroshima City, since April of this year. The company had proposed to the city that it replace regular LPG with carbon-offset LPG as a decarbonization measure.
The company said: “This year marks the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing. We would like to provide a stable supply of gas to the Flame of Peace, which continues to be lit with our wishes for peace and the elimination of nuclear weapons, as well as to contribute to environmental conservation.”
