Commitment to Peace, delivered on August 6, 2011

On March 11, countless lives were lost in the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.
Even now, many people are still missing.
The tsunami’s destructive power left us speechless. People lost their beloved families and friends, everything they owned, and their devastation fills us with deep pain and sadness.

On this day sixty-six years ago at 8:15 a.m., an atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.
The blast tore through the city and the flames burned everything to the ground. In a flash, the bomb claimed many precious lives, forever changing life as people knew it.
It brought about unbearable pain.
Grief.
And suffering.

Life is precious. Each and every one of us is important.
So why do people fight and take so many lives in war?
If people can start wars, we should be able to prevent them too.

In our city of sadness, green buds began to grow in the earth. Citizens embraced their wish for peace and started on the road to recovery.
The future is in our hands. If we press on together in our joy and sorrow, we can bring back hope for a brighter day.

We believe in the power of humanity.
People can show great kindness in helping each other out.
People can overcome their differences and agree on the importance of peace.
As youth living in the moment, we dedicate ourselves to building a future where hopes and dreams abound. This is our promise.
