The Hiroshima Peace Center Foundation, chaired by Mamoru Tsuru, announced on October 13 that Sunao Tsuboi, chairman of the Hiroshima Prefectural Confederation of A-bomb survivors will receive the 23rd Kiyoshi Tanimoto Peace Award.

Mr. Tsuboi experienced the atomic bombing at Fujimi-cho (present-day Naka Ward), 1.2 kilometers from the hypocenter. He suffered terrible burns, nearly losing his life. After retiring from his work as the principal of a junior high school, he joined the movement of A-bomb survivors, sharing his account of the bombing and calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons. His efforts have taken him across Japan and to many places abroad. Mr. Tsuboi is co-chair of the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organization and has served as a leader of the A-bomb survivors in their activities to promote peace.

Mr. Tsuboi was selected for the award, Mr. Tsuru explained, because “we wanted to show our respect for his devoted efforts for peace, despite poor health.” Mr. Tsuboi commented: “To my mind, this award is for all the A-bomb survivors and our supporters. I would like to continue spreading my message, that its essential for us to honor human life.”

The award ceremony will be held at the “Gathering for International Peace” scheduled to take place at the Hiroshima Institute of Technology in Naka Ward.

The Kiyoshi Tanimoto Award was established in 1987 to honor the legacy of the late Reverend Kiyoshi Tanimoto of the Hiroshima Nagarekawa Church, who was dedicated to providing support for children who had lost their parents to the atomic bomb. Past recipients of the prize include the film director Kaneto Shindo (from Saeki Ward, Hiroshima) and the actress Sayuri Yoshinaga, known for her readings of A-bomb poems.
