Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum to be open on December 29 and January 1

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and the Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims, both located in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in the heart of the city, have decided to increase the number of days these facilities will be open over the year-end and New Year holidays. They will now be open on December 29 and January 1, days that they were closed in the past. Responding to requests from travelers and people returning to Hiroshima during this time and wishing to visit the park, both facilities will be open on January 1, marking the first such occasion.

Previously, both the museum and the hall were closed for four days, from December 29 to January 1. But this year they will remain open on December 29 and January 1, while closed for maintenance on December 30 and 31.

The change was sought by Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui, who directed the facilities to extend their operating hours during the holidays. “We mustn’t disappoint the people who are visiting Hiroshima,” he said. “We should demonstrate a sense of hospitality.”

The days Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum is open is stipulated in the Ordinance Enforcement Regulations, set by the City of Hiroshima. With respect to the Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims, the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation, a city-affiliated organization, is charged by the Japanese government with oversight of the hall’s operations. The City of Hiroshima must therefore negotiate any changes in the calendar with the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, which has already indicated its approval.

Meanwhile, the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum and the Nagasaki National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims will be closed from December 29 to 31. The facilities will be open again from January 1.
