Gensuikyo World Conference closes in Hiroshima, criticizes nuclear deterrence

by Jumpei Fujimura, Staff Writer

The World Conference Against A & H Bombs, organized by the Japan Council against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs and its affiliated organizations, adopted the Declaration of the International Meeting on August 5. The three-day conference held at the Hiroshima City Bunka Koryu Kaikan in Naka Ward then closed.

The declaration criticizes nuclear deterrence as the source of growing nuclear stockpiles. Referring to the rapidly-spreading trend to view nuclear weapons as inhumane, the statement stresses the importance of conveying the real consequences of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It also establishes a plan of action in seeking the start of negotiations toward the conclusion of a nuclear weapons convention.

Kunikazu Noguchi, representative of the Conference Executive Committee, stated in his speech, “Japan, which suffered the atomic bombings, can play an important role because it can convey the horror of the devastation caused by nuclear weapons as actual experience.” He called on the participants to expand this movement.

On the same day, the Hiroshima meeting of the World Conference Against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs, sponsored by the Japan Congress Against A- and H-Bombs (Gensuikin) and other organizations, held seven workshops on such themes as “ending Japan’s reliance on nuclear energy” and “peace and nuclear disarmament” at Workpier Hiroshima.
