by Michiko Tanaka, Staff Writer

On August 19, the City of Hiroshima announced that 219 ideas have been received for activities designed to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing in 2015. Of these ideas, 121 were from the public, 93 from city government employees, and five were anonymous contributions. Proposals include constructing a reproduction of the former Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, the building which became the Atomic Bomb Dome, and staging friendly baseball games in Hiroshima between the United States and Japan.

Taking these proposals into consideration, the city will hold discussions and announce its basic plan for the anniversary year around next February.

The city solicited ideas from the public over a one-month period starting on July 15. Among proposals from the public, 44 were from individuals and 16 from groups. These individuals include 32 residents of the city of Hiroshima, five residents of other parts of Hiroshima Prefecture, and seven residents of other prefectures. Ideas were also received from 57 city employees.

The proposals in each category break down as follows: holding conferences, ceremonies, and events: 96; improving facilities in the city: 36; publishing books or producing films: 25; others: 64. Some of the wide variety of proposals include: constructing a replica of the former Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall (now, the Atomic Bomb Dome) on the site of the former Municipal Baseball Stadium in downtown Hiroshima; organizing friendly baseball games between professional baseball players from Japan and the United States; and creating a new peace bell based on designs solicited from high school students around the world.

The city views the 70th year since the atomic bombing as a year to share and spread Hiroshima’s wish for peace. According to the city’s Planning and Coordination Division, many of the proposals convey this desire and it will be reflected in the plan after careful discussion.
