Panel exhibition on nuclear weapons opens in Hiroshima

by Michiko Tanaka, Staff Writer

On September 24, a panel exhibition entitled “Everything You Treasure—For a World Free From Nuclear Weapons” began at the NTT Cred Hall in downtown Hiroshima. The exhibition, which will run through September 29, looks at the issue of nuclear weapons from various angles and calls for their abolition. Admission is free.

The panel exhibition has been organized by Soka Gakkai International and the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). Forty panels measuring 2.2 meters in length and 1.1 meters in width offer information on 12 themes, including the effects of radiation on the human body and potential climate changes caused by the use of nuclear weapons. Soka Gakkai International hopes that the exhibition will convey to visitors that nuclear arms are a concern close to us all and provide an opportunity for people to reflect on why these weapons must be eliminated.

The two organizations created an English version of the panels last year and have displayed them in Japan and overseas. This is the first time that Japanese panels have been presented to the public. Also at the venue are spaces for watching video footage of A-bomb testimony and reading illustrated books about the atomic bombing.

The exhibition is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. On September 29, it will close at 5 p.m.
