Japan Confederation of A- and H-bomb Sufferers Organizations calls for Japan to abandon U.S. nuclear umbrella

by Jumpei Fujimura, Staff Writer

On October 22, the Japan Confederation of A- and H-bomb Sufferers Organizations released a statement calling on the Japanese government, which has endorsed a new joint statement that stresses the inhumanity of nuclear weapons and appeals for their non-use, to abandon the U.S. “nuclear umbrella” and press the nuclear weapon states to abolish nuclear weapons.

The statement points out that Japan’s policy of nuclear deterrence, which depends on the nuclear umbrella, is premised on the use of nuclear weapons. It also criticized this policy as incompatible with the principle of the joint statement, because the statement clearly stipulates that it is in the interest of the very survival of humanity that nuclear weapons are never used again, under any circumstances.

The statement then calls for the policy to be revised, declaring that the obligation of the A-bombed nation of Japan should be defined as withdrawing from the U.S. nuclear umbrella immediately, pressing the nuclear weapon states to abolish nuclear weapons, and realizing the elimination of these arms.
