Afghan finance minister thanks Hiroshima governor for reconstruction assistance

On February 3, Afghan Minister of Finance Dr. Omar Zakhilwal, 47, met with Hiroshima Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki at the Hiroshima Prefectural Office. The minister thanked the prefectural government for assisting the Hiroshima Office of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). UNITAR has been providing training sessions to Afghans who are working to reconstruct their nation.

Dr. Zakhilwal shared the outcome of the trainings with Mr. Yuzaki, telling the governor that the trainees learn about the history of devastation and reconstruction experienced by Hiroshima, and return to Afghanistan with the message of making the world a more peaceful place. He asked Mr. Yuzaki to continue the prefecture’s support for the UNITAR program and Mr. Yuzaki responded by saying that it is vital to nurture human resources in a wide range of fields for reconstruction work.

Since 2003, a total of about 450 people have taken part in the Hiroshima Fellowship for Afghanistan, administered by UNITAR’s Hiroshima Office. Hiroshima Prefecture, which originally asked UNITAR to establish this branch in Hiroshima, has been providing the organization with financial support.
