Hiroshima governor, mayor to attend NPT PrepCom in New York

It was announced on February 7 that Hiroshima Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki and Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui will visit the United States to attend the third session of the Preparatory Committee for the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference, to be held at United Nations headquarters in New York from April 28 through May 9. Mr. Yuzaki will become the first Hiroshima governor to observe the proceedings at the NPT Review Conference. The prefectural government is planning to organize a panel discussion in New York to call for the elimination of nuclear weapons.
The topics for discussion at the third session will include the agenda for the 2015 NPT Review Conference. On the sidelines of the committee meeting, Hiroshima Prefecture will hold a panel discussion on the progress being made in nuclear abolition and disarmament, with a focus on the inhumanity of these weapons. In addition, Governor Yuzaki will give a presentation on the prefecture’s “Hiroshima for Global Peace” plan.
For Mayor Matsui, this will mark the third straight year that he has attended a preparatory committee, following the first session held in Vienna, Austria in 2012 and the second in Geneva, Switzerland in 2013. As the president of Mayors for Peace, Mr. Matsui will deliver a speech on April 30 in a meeting of non-governmental organizations, one of the official functions of the preparatory committee.
The two leaders met at the Hiroshima Prefectural Office on February 7. Referring to the planned panel discussion, Mr. Yuzaki said, “I hope to take advantage of this opportunity to effectively convey Hiroshima’s efforts to the world and to strengthen Hiroshima’s presence.” Agreeing to join the panel discussion, Mr. Matsui said, “I’d like to introduce our efforts to eliminate nuclear weapons by 2020. I’m happy to cooperate to make this event a success in sending out our messages.”
