Belarus ambassador to Japan visits Hiroshima to promote exchange in radiation research, other areas

On February 12, Sergei Rakhmanov, the Belarusian ambassador to Japan, visited Hiroshima City Hall and met with Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui. The two men agreed to promote interaction among their citizens, following the conclusion of an academic agreement in the field of radiation research, among other areas, between a national research institute in Belarus and Hiroshima University.
The Republican Research Centre for Radiation Medicine and Human Ecology, located in the city of Gomel, conducts research in connection with those who were exposed to radiation as a result of the Chernobyl nuclear accident and provides treatment to these sufferers. On February 13, this facility and Hiroshima University’s Research Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine, located in Minami Ward, will conclude their agreement. They are planning to make use of the results of their joint research and exchange programs of researchers in order to lend support to those affected by the accident at the Fukushima No. 1 (Daiichi) nuclear power plant.
Raising the question of how people can be protected from the harm caused by radiation, Mr. Rakhmanov stressed that continuous cooperation out in the field will benefit the world. Mr. Matsui expressed his hope of sharing Hiroshima’s wish for peace with the people of Belarus through cultural and economic exchange, and asked for support from Belarus in increasing the number of member cities of Mayors for Peace.
