Hiroshima University Hospital accepts trainees from hospital in Fukushima Prefecture

Hiroshima University Hospital, located in Minami Ward, Hiroshima, is preparing to accept medical trainees from Minamisoma City General Hospital from fiscal year 2014. Minamisoma City General Hospital, located in Fukushima Prefecture, site of the Great East Japan Earthquake, made this request because a significant number of hospital staff left the area after the accident at the Fukushima No. 1 (Daiichi) nuclear power plant and the hospital is now suffering a serious shortage of experienced staff members able to serve in a leadership role. Minamisoma City General Hospital asked Hiroshima University Hospital for support in its efforts to overcome the collapse of its community and regain its self-reliance.

Hiroshima University Hospital has developed a training program for physical therapists. It will first accept Yoichiro Ikeda, a physical therapist, for one year. The department where the training will be conducted and the content of the training are now being finalized. Mr. Ikeda is eager to begin. “I hope to gain a wide range of knowledge and help enhance the level of health care in Minamisoma,” he said. In addition to studying his field of expertise, he will also learn how to write research papers and give presentations at scientific meetings on conditions in the disaster-stricken region.

Since the earthquake, the number of inpatients who suffer from cerebral apoplexy has increased at the hospital though there is no scientific evidence yet linking this spike to evacuations from homes. With the hospital planning to open a cerebral apoplexy center in 2016 to provide medical care around the clock, training physical therapists and other staff members has become an urgent need. The city of Minamisoma is located within roughly 20 to 40 kilometers of the crippled nuclear plant. About 11,000 people still live in temporary housing and other places, after evacuating from areas that became contaminated with high levels of radiation.

This training program is the result of an agreement between Hiroshima University and the City of Minamisoma, made in August 2013, to engage in mutual efforts. Yoshihiro Ito, director of the Clinical Support Department of Hiroshima University Hospital, welcomes the first trainee. “I would like him to meet many doctors and gain a wide range of knowledge and expertise,” he said.

Yukio Kanazawa, director of Minamisoma City General Hospital, commented, “We lack not only physical therapists, but a range of other professionals who can assume leadership roles. The continuing support of Hiroshima University, in accepting trainees, will be greatly appreciated.”
