U.S.-Japan Friendship Day to be held at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in May

Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, located in Yamaguchi Prefecture, announced on March 7 that the 2014 U.S.-Japan Friendship Day will be held on May 5. This year’s Friendship Day event, the first such event in two years, will be staged on a smaller scale than in the past and will not include military aircraft performances due to fiscal concerns from the U.S. government.

As in the past, this year’s Friendship Day will include a display of aircraft, foods, and activities. Planning and coordination is still under way, and details will be released later, according to the air station.

Since construction projects involving the realignment of U.S. military forces in Japan are in progress on the base, privately-owned vehicles, including motorcycles and mopeds, will be prohibited from entering.

Last year, the Friendship Day was canceled due to cuts in the U.S. government’s annual expenditures. This year, the air station has decided to realize its strong wish to again hold the event.
