by Junji Akechi, Staff Writer

On March 19, Akihiko Tanaka, 59, president of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), visited Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui at Hiroshima City Hall. He expressed his desire to further deepen ties with the City of Hiroshima, saying that Hiroshima’s appeal for peace is important in Japan’s outreach to the world.

Mr. Tanaka expressed his gratitude to the City of Hiroshima and Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, located in Naka Ward, for their support, such as lending artifacts for A-bomb exhibits held in various parts of the world by members of the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers. He stressed the significance of these exhibitions, saying that they convey the fact that the Japanese people value peace. Mr. Matsui responded by saying that the city would like to pursue a broader relationship with JICA as well.

Mr. Tanaka visited Hiroshima on March 18 and 19. Prior to his meeting with the mayor, he toured Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. On the afternoon of March 19, he visited Hiroshima University, located in Higashihiroshima, Hiroshima Prefecture.
