Philippine Consul General visits Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum before NPDI meeting

With the meeting of foreign ministers of the Non-proliferation and Disarmament Initiative (NPDI) drawing near, Maria Taguiang, 59, the Philippine Consul General in Osaka-Kobe, visited Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park on March 20. The Philippines is one of the members of the NPDI, which is composed of 12 non-nuclear states. The foreign ministers’ meeting is scheduled to take place on April 11 and 12 in Hiroshima.

Led by Noriyuki Masuda, 54, deputy director of the museum, Ms. Taguiang spent one hour touring Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. She carefully observed the artifacts on display, including a charred lunchbox, and asked questions about the difference between the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. She later offered flowers at the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims and commented that the atomic bombing is truly a sad historical event and that she will convey this fact to the Filipino people.

Ms. Taguiang met with Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui at City Hall and handed him a letter from Philippine Foreign Secretary Albert Del Rosario, who will attend the upcoming meeting. Responding to Mr. Matsui’s request for support to increase the number of member cities of Mayors for Peace in the Philippines, she said she will encourage more cities to join the group.
