President of Hawaii Rotary Club meets Hiroshima mayor to promote friendly ties

Members of the Rotary Club of Pearl Harbor, based in Honolulu, Hawaii, met with Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui at Hiroshima City Hall on March 24.
The eight members of the club visiting Hiroshima are business owners. Lester Hunkele III, 66, president of the club, said that people in both nations have been creating friendly and forward-looking relations, burying old bitterness. Welcoming his remark, Mr. Matsui said, “I’m moved by the fact that the peoples of two nations that waged a war are now increasing their mutual understanding.”
The Rotary Club of Pearl Harbor and the Rotary Club of Hiroshima Southeast established a sister club relationship in 1982 with a view to overcoming the tragedies wrought by the attack on Pearl Harbor and the atomic bombing and cultivating friendly relations. They have been conducting biennial visits, back and forth, since that time. The delegation from Hawaii is visiting Hiroshima between March 20 and 25. They offered flowers at the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims, in Peace Memorial Park, on March 24.
