by Junji Akechi, Staff Writer

Dionisio da Costa Babo Soares, the Minister for Justice of Timor-Leste, visited Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum on March 26. Guided by Kenji Shiga, director of the museum, Mr. Soares toured the museum for about an hour, studying models which show the state of the city before and after the atomic bombing, along with artifacts, such as a charred lunchbox, and other exhibits. Mr. Soares commented, “I’m speechless as I was reminded of the many people who died in the civil war in our nation. Tragedies like these must never be repeated.”

After visiting the museum, Mr. Soares offered flowers at the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims and listened to a survivor’s testimony.

Timor-Leste became independent from Indonesia in 2002. Mr. Soares is visiting Japan from March 23 to 29 at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His visit to Hiroshima was arranged at his request.
