Message from Mairead Maguire, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate

My dear Japanese friends,
I write to express my love and concern to you in Japan as you all face the ongoing trauma and damage from last Friday’s major earthquake, tsunami and the ensuing nuclear crisis. I pray for you all, and especially for the comfort and relief of those who have lost loved ones. I pray for the safety of everyone in danger and all those working to help in this tragedy. I pray also for those in danger of nuclear radiation and for the safety of those working to keep the nuclear damage under control.
We are sad to see the people of Japan suffering so much, as a result of the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear crisis, and yet as we watch events unfold on our television sets, the whole world is moved by the grace, courage and bravery of the Japanese people, in the face of such tragedy. The gentle dignity of the people of Japan facing such tragedy has, via Television, been flashed around the world, and their dignity has touched the lives of millions of us, giving us hope in humanity, even in the face of such unbelievable suffering and devastation.
We know the people of Japan will be strengthened by the love of their families and friends, and we pray they will also take consolation from the knowledge that there are millions of people around the world who love them and who hold them in their prayers and in their hearts in these dark and sorrowful days.
