Chinese pro-democracy activist may meet with Dalai Lama at Nobel summit in Hiroshima

A former Chinese pro-democracy leader is arranging a face-to-face meeting with Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama when they attend a meeting of Nobel Peace Prize laureates in Hiroshima next month, informed sources said Thursday.

Wuer Kaixi, 42, will attend the Hiroshima meeting on Nov. 12-14 on behalf of imprisoned Chinese dissident Liu Xiabo, who won the peace prize this year.

The meeting between Wuer, one of the leaders of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protest in Beijing, and the Dalai Lama, if realized, would draw international attention and be certain to provoke the ire of the Chinese government.

Chinese President Hu Jintao is expected to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum summit to be held in Yokohama on Nov. 13-14.

Wuer told Kyodo News he has been greatly influenced by Liu and that he wants to promote in the international community his idea of bringing about democracy through nonviolence.

He has been invited to join the Hiroshima meeting by former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, who won the peace prize in 1990. The Dalai Lama is the 1989 laureate.
