Fukushima Gov. Sato rejects meeting with TEPCO president

Tokyo Electric Power Co. President Masataka Shimizu visited the Fukushima prefectural government office Monday afternoon to apologize for the nuclear disaster at its Fukushima Daiichi power plant, but Gov. Yuhei Sato has declined to meet him, according to officials from the utility and the prefectural government.

Shimizu arrived at the utility's office in the city of Fukushima Monday morning, a month after the massive earthquake and tsunami crippled the nuclear power plant on March 11.

Last month, Shimizu sought to hold a meeting with Sato to apologize for the nuclear accidents but was rejected.

After meeting with members of a task force addressing the nuclear crisis, Shimizu is set to meet the press. It would be his first public appearance since attending a press conference on March 13.

Shimizu was hospitalized late March for hypertension and dizziness as the company continued battling to contain the nuclear crisis.
