Industry ministry holds meeting for energy policy review

The industry ministry on Thursday held the first meeting of people from various fields to discuss the country's energy policy the government has decided to review in the wake of the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The members include Akito Arima, professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo, Takashi Tachibana, a well-known journalist, Jitsuro Terashima, chairman of the Japan Research Institute, and Mitsuo Ohashi, an adviser to chemical maker Showa Denko K.K.

The meeting follows Prime Minister Naoto Kan announcing Tuesday that the government will review its target for nuclear power to account for 50 percent of the country's total electricity output by 2030.

Before the nuclear disaster was triggered due to the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, 54 commercial nuclear reactors were supplying around 30 percent of the total electricity generated in the country.

The first gathering was also attended by Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Banri Kaieda. The ministry has the Natural Resources and Energy Agency under its wing.
