Gov’t panel eyes 100,000 yen monthly damages for nuclear evacuees
Jun. 21, 2011
A government panel agreed Monday to pay 100,000 yen each monthly to those who have been forced to evacuate from areas around the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to compensate for their psychological pains.
The payment for those who stay at temporary facilities, apartments and hotels will continue for six months since the breakout of the nuclear disaster in March, according to the panel under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
Those who stay at shelters will receive 120,000 yen monthly as they face more difficulty in securing their privacy.
The monthly payouts will be reduced to 50,000 yen each without exception from six to 12 months since the occurrence of the accident, and the panel will further discuss the amount beyond the period.
