Fukushima to begin checking people for internal exposure next week

The Fukushima prefectural government said Monday it will examine a total of 2,800 children, pregnant women and other people in three municipalities for internal exposure to radiation, starting next week, as part of its health survey of all residents in the prefecture following the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant.

The three municipalities are Namie, Iitate and Kawamata, the government told the prefectural assembly.

The examination will use three whole body counters owned by the Nuclear Science Research Institute and the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Engineering Laboratories, both belonging to the Japan Atomic Energy Agency and located in Tokai Village, Ibaraki Prefecture.

The Fukushima government also plans to introduce two more counters of its own in August and five radiation measuring vehicles, starting in November.

Internal radiation exposure is caused by the absorption of radioactive materials through the nose and mouth.

The health survey of all of some 2 million residents in the northeastern Japan prefecture started June 27, with 120 people in the three municipalities getting checked for internal exposure at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences in the city of Chiba.
