Experts urge gov’t to improve info disclosure on nuclear crisis

An academic society of nuclear experts on Monday urged the government and Tokyo Electric Power Co. to promptly improve the disclosure of information on the Fukushima nuclear crisis to ease public anxiety.

Public concern about nuclear power has increased due to the disclosure of ''obscure and confusing'' information about the crisis at the utility's Fukushima Daiichi power plant following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami disaster, the Atomic Energy Society of Japan said in a statement.

The messy disclosure of information has hindered experts' efforts to probe and address the crisis, the society said.

Among specific problems, data released in late May of radiation measurements taken soon after the disaster in March made not only experts but also the general public skeptical about information released by the government and Tokyo Electric, according to the society.

Commenting on the statement, the government's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said it will expedite the disclosure of information, admitting to confusion on its part in the aftermath of the accident.
