At press conference foreign minister states he will analyze “Hiroshima Report”

At a press conference on April 8, Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida, who represents Hiroshima District No. 1, said he would analyze a report showing Japan had slipped in global rankings of nuclear disarmament efforts. Released by Hiroshima Prefecture, the “Hiroshima Report” rates the initiatives undertaken by countries around the world.
According to the report, Japan fell to fifth place from last year’s top ranking in nuclear disarmament. Japan was marked down for failing to sign an international joint statement issued in April of last year citing the inhumanity of nuclear weapons and opposing their use. Mr. Kishida noted that Japan did, however, sign a similar joint statement issued last fall. He said he did not understand the logic behind some parts of the report, including its negative evaluation of Japan for its reliance on the nuclear umbrella of the United States, and would closely examine the report’s content.
Mr. Kishida said he intended to conduct a “thorough debate” on the inhumanity of nuclear weapons at the ministerial meeting of the Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Initiative to be held in Hiroshima on April 11 and 12. He also indicated that he would make an effort to continue to lead the discussion on nuclear disarmament.
