Japanese foreign minister writes op-ed in American newspaper on “Japan’s Commitment to a Nuclear-Free World”

Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida, who represents district one in Hiroshima, contributed an op-ed to the Wall Street Journal Asia, an American newspaper, for its issue of April 10. In his article, headlined “Japan’s Commitment to a Nuclear-Free World,” Mr. Kishida expressed his determination to do his utmost at the meeting of foreign ministers of the Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Initiative (NPDI), slated to open on April 11 in Hiroshima.
Mr. Kishida described nuclear disarmament as “an integral part of my work.” He cited such items for discussion at the meeting as greater transparency involving nuclear disarmament and the need for multilateral negotiations with all nations that hold nuclear arms. On recent ballistic missile launches by North Korea, he wrote: “The international community must send a clear message to North Korea to cease these provocative actions.”
Mr. Kishida also stressed that Japan will play an active role in strengthening control over exports of materials and technologies related to nuclear weapons and preventing nuclear terrorism. He concluded his article by stating: “As a foreign minister of Japan, I will work passionately to ensure that positive progress is sustained toward achieving a world free of nuclear weapons.”
