Students from Tinian, island where A-bomb plane took off, visit Hiroshima museum

by Michiko Tanaka, Staff Writer

Five students from Tinian Junior/Senior High School visited Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum on April 19 and learned about the devastating impact of the atomic bombing. The island of Tinian, a U.S. dominion in the Northern Mariana Islands in the Pacific Ocean, was the launching point for the Enola Gay, the American bomber which dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Students from Koryo High School, a sister school located in Asaminami Ward, Hiroshima, guided them through the museum.

The five students, accompanied by 24 students from Koryo High School, saw models of the city before and after the bombing and photos of survivors who suffered serious burns in the A-bomb blast. Darsha Camacho, 17, a second-year student, said, “I was shocked to see a student’s burned uniform. I will tell the tragedy of Hiroshima to my family and friends.”

Tinian and Koryo high schools have been sending students to each other since 2005, when a sister-school arrangement was made between them. The five students arrived in Japan on April 17 and will stay with Japanese families until April 21.
