Ethiopian ambassador and British consul-general visit Hiroshima and discuss peace administration and economic exchange

On April 21, Markos Tekle Rike, Ethiopian ambassador to Tokyo, and Michael Shearer, British consul-general based in Osaka, each visited Hiroshima Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki at the prefectural government office and exchanged views with Mr. Yuzaki on peace administration and economic exchange.
Ambassador Markos Tekle Rike paid his first visit to Hiroshima, with his wife, on April 19 and 20 and attended a meeting of the Japan Association for Nilo-Ethiopian Studies. He told the governor that he was shocked by his tour of Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and that he would like to support Hiroshima’s efforts to promote peace. Mr. Yuzaki thanked him and said that Africa’s voice is vital as it enlarges its presence in the world. Governor Yuzaki presented brushes made in Kumano to the ambassador as a gift.
Consul-general Shearer, who studied at Kansai Gaidai University, spoke in Japanese. He stressed that there are many business opportunities between the two countries, referring to the example of Japanese sake, which has become popular in the United Kingdom.
Mr. Shearer also met with Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui at City Hall. As president of Mayors for Peace, which is calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons, Mr. Matsui asked Mr. Shearer for his support in inviting more mayors from the U.K. to join the organization. Mr. Shearer responded with enthusiasm, saying, “I’m from Manchester, which is a ‘vice president city’ of Mayors for Peace. I’ll do my best to help invite more cities to become members.”
