Cites significance of trip to Hiroshima: “United States’ deep understanding of the consequences of nuclear weapons use”

New York – During the general discussion at the Third Session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2015 Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) on April 29, Rose Gottemoeller, U.S. Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security, delivered remarks in which she stressed the significance of her two-day visit to Hiroshima last month. In her statement to government representatives, Ms. Gottemoeller referred to “the profound challenge nuclear weapons pose to our security as nations and our survival as human beings” and said, “My recent trips to the Marshall Islands and Hiroshima were potent reminders of the need to persevere in confronting this challenge.”
Ms. Gottemoeller traveled to Hiroshima for the April 11 and 12 ministerial meeting of the Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Initiative, which comprises 12 non-nuclear nations. During her stay she laid flowers at the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims in Peace Memorial Park and listened to the account of a survivor of the atomic bombing.
In line with the recent focus on the inhumanity of nuclear weapons, Ms. Gottemoeller said, “Indeed, it is the United States’ deep understanding of the consequences of nuclear weapons use – including the devastating health effects – that has guided and motivated our efforts to reduce and ultimately eliminate these most hazardous weapons.”
