Mayor of Fremantle, Australia visits Hiroshima

City plays leading role in Mayors for Peace
Mayor vows to urge other cities to join

Brad Pettitt, 41, mayor of Fremantle, Australia, met with Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui at the International Conference Center Hiroshima on May 7. Fremantle is among the cities to be designated as Leadership Cities by Mayors for Peace in April of next year. Mayor Matsui serves as the organization’s president. In the meeting Mayor Pettitt pledged to promote peace-related activities in his community.

Fremantle became a member of Mayors for Peace in September 2005, and, at the request of the City of Hiroshima, has agreed to lead the efforts of 11 member cities in Western Australia. Mayor Pettitt said he plans to hold a meeting of leaders in the state in September and that he would tell them about the activities of Mayors for Peace and urge them to join.

Mayor Pettitt was in Japan to attend a meeting in Tokyo. He arrived in Hiroshima on May 4 and visited the Peace Memorial Museum the following day.
