Students from sister cities express wish for world peace in paper cranes

by Kaori Ogasawara, Staff Writer

Exchange students from Bremerton, a city in the United States, made paper cranes at View Port Kure, a hotel in the city of Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture, on July 31. The paper cranes will be brought to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park on August 6, the anniversary of the atomic bombing.

Four students from Kure High School taught the three American students, in English, how to fold the paper cranes. The American students carefully followed their instructions. Along with members of the club Soroptimist International Kure, the students made about 700 paper cranes.

Members of the club will also join the students when they visit Peace Memorial Park. Maxwell Cowdery, 18, said that his sister, who was an exchange student, too, showed him an illustrated book on Sadako Sasaki. He added that he hopes these paper cranes will bring happiness to people around the world.

Kanako Matsutani, 17, said that she hopes the paper cranes will raise awareness of war and peace.

Bremerton, located in the state of Washington, established a sister city relationship with Kure in 1970.
