Reminders of persecution of Jews on exhibit at Holocaust center in Hiroshima Prefecture

by Tomohiro Nagai, Staff Writer

A special exhibition featuring a passport with the letter “J” stamped in red, meaning it belonged to a Jew, is being held at the Holocaust Education Center in Fukuyama, Hiroshima Prefecture. The exhibition will run until November 29, and admission is free.

The passport belonged to a Jewish male who was killed by Nazis at the age of 20 in 1941. It was donated to the center in 1995 by his brother, who had kept it as a memento.

The exhibits include 15 panels which explain the persecution of Jews in Vienna, Austria, where the man lived, and his brother’s life after surviving the Holocaust. Eyeglasses and other belongings of the brother, who died five years ago, are also on display.

The man’s nephew will travel from Israel to the center and make a speech on November 18. Akio Yoshida, the center’s deputy director, said, “I hope people will turn their thoughts to peace by considering the lives of a Jewish family who went through various vicissitudes of fortune.” The center is open from Tuesday through Saturday, but closed on public holidays.
