by Eriko Shintani, Staff Writer

On October 31, Hiromi Ohishi, 69, chairman of the Hiroshima Kenjinkai of Brazil, visited the Hiroshima Prefectural Office to call on Hiroshima Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki to attend the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Kenjinkai, scheduled to take place in October 2015 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The Kenjinkai is comprised of people with ties to Japan.

Mr. Ohnishi explained that about 1,000 people traveled to Brazil as emigrants from Hiroshima Prefecture prior to World War II. He handed a letter of invitation to the governor, saying, “Next year also marks the 120th anniversary of the normalization of relations between the two nations. I sincerely hope that the governor of Hiroshima will be able to visit Brazil.” In conjunction with the ceremony, the association is planning to hold a poster exhibition about the atomic bombing. Mr. Yuzaki promised to carefully consider the invitation, remarking, “I will make an effort to visit Brazil at least once.”

The Kenjinkai was founded in July 1955. Mr. Ohnishi is a second-generation Japanese-Brazilian whose mother was originally from present-day Saeki Ward, Hiroshima. He arrived in Japan on October 21 to attend a convention in Tokyo for people with Japanese ancestry who live overseas. He will return to Brazil on November 3.
