Japanese foreign minister welcomes U.S. decision to take part in next conference on humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons

Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida, elected from district one in Hiroshima, has welcomed the decision made by the United States, a nuclear power, to participate for the first time in an international conference on the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons. The next conference will be held in December in Vienna, Austria. Speaking at a press conference on November 11, Mr. Kishida said, “I commend and welcome the participation of the United States.”

Since the first international conference on the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons, which took place in Norway in March 2013, the five main nuclear weapon states have not attended these gatherings. In welcoming U.S. participation, Mr. Kishida said, “Japan has been stressing the importance of wide participation by all countries, including the nuclear powers.” He added, “I hope to see productive discussions.”

Mr. Kishida also announced that Japan will send a delegation to the conference headed by Toshio Sano, Ambassador of the Delegation of Japan to the Conference on Disarmament. Japanese delegations sent to the past two conferences were headed by directors of the Foreign Ministry.

Mr. Kishida emphasized that Japan is willing to contribute more actively to the discussions by enhancing the participation of delegation members.
