Russia added to Chugoku Shimbun’s Peace Media Center website: Expanded effort to convey desire for abolition of nuclear weapons

On November 26 the Chugoku Shimbun added Russian to its Hiroshima Peace Media Center website. The site, an effort by the paper to convey Hiroshima’s atomic bombing experience to people in Japan and abroad, now presents material in five languages: Japanese, English, Chinese, French and Russian. The addition of Russian is intended to reach more people prior to next year’s 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing.

The site’s foreign languages, including English, are all the languages of nations that possess nuclear weapons. Through the site, the Chugoku Shimbun hopes to convey the reality of the destruction caused by the atomic bombing and the risks of radiation to the people of the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, France and China, all of which possess nuclear weapons.

The Peace Media Center website was set up in January 2008 to serve as a source of information on the atomic bombing and peace-related issues. In conjunction with the redesign of the site in April of this year, Chinese and French versions were added to the original Japanese and English. Since its establishment the site has been accessed by people in nearly 200 countries and territories.
