Swiss photographer’s photo exhibition of people living in conflict areas held in Hiroshima

by Michiko Tanaka, Staff Writer

An exhibition titled “War from the Victims’ Perspective – Photographs by Jean Mohr” is being held at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. The 89-year-old Swiss photographer has been active in photographing the lives of people in conflict areas. The exhibition will run until December 27, and admission is free.

The exhibition is being held in the greenbelt to the north of Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. A total of 53 photos taken at refugee camps in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia are displayed on 0.9 by 1.8 meter panels, which are arranged in five hexagons.

One photo shows a mother gazing at her newborn baby, and others show people standing in long lines to receive food rations or children training to become carpenters.

Mr. Mohr worked as a staff member at the International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC), which is based in Geneva. His photo exhibitions have been held in more than 80 countries since the 1960s. This exhibition in Hiroshima has been organized by the ICRC and the Swiss Embassy in Tokyo, commemorating the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Japan.

Vincent Nicod, head of the ICRC Tokyo mission, hopes that the exhibition will convey the strength of human beings in rising again from the destruction and despair of war as well as the importance of learning lessons from mistakes made in the past.
