Citizens’ forum conducted by anti-nuclear NGOs draws to a close: Participants vow to enhance efforts to bring about nuclear weapons convention

VIENNA—A citizens’ forum conducted by anti-nuclear non-governmental organizations (NGO) drew to a close here on the evening of December 7. During two days of discussions, forum participants agreed on the need to enhance efforts to bring about a nuclear weapons convention.
On the final day, representatives of NGOs from various nations participated in a panel discussion on the subject of outlawing nuclear weapons. One person said that nuclear nations were feeling pressed with growth of the movement focusing on the inhumanity of nuclear weapons. Another said that next year’s 70th anniversary of the atomic bombings presented a good opportunity to start negotiations on a nuclear weapons convention. The participants vowed to put more pressure on governments to promote a treaty banning nuclear weapons.
About 600 people from all over the world attended the forum, which was sponsored by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. Hiroshima was represented by Haruko Moritaki, co-chair of the Hiroshima Alliance for Nuclear Weapons Abolition, and Kazuo Okoshi, secretary general of the Hiroshima Prefectural Confederation of A-bomb Sufferers Organizations, chaired by Kazushi Kaneko. The two organizations set up booths at the venue, where they provided information on the destruction caused by the atomic bombing.
