Renovation of “path of prayer” in Hiroshima Peace Park completed with new granite paving stones

by Hisashi Kawate, Staff Writer

The renovation of the approach to the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park was completed on March 6. The foundation of the approach has been strengthened so that it can withstand the weight of heavy machinery that will be used in setting up the large tent for this year’s Peace Memorial Ceremony to be held on August 6, the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing. Tourists and local citizens walked on the approach, which has been renovated after 33 years.

The approach is 74 meters long and six meters wide. The 840 granite paving stones, which were used to pave the approach in 1982, were 2.5 centimeters thick. They were replaced by 8-centimeter thick granite stone slabs. After city officials from the technical management division checked whether the surface of the approach was even and level, the approach was open to people for the first time in two months.

The cost of this renovation, one of the projects to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing, was 24 million yen. The Citizens Activities Promotion Division of Hiroshima City hopes that many people will come to the park in this milestone year, seven decades after the A-bomb attack.
