Japanese foreign minister responds to Putin remark, stresses no-use of nuclear weapons

In response to a remark made by Russian President Vladimir Putin that he had authorized the possible use of nuclear weapons in connection with the conflict in Ukraine, Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida stressed at a news conference held on March 17 that nuclear arms must never be used.

Mr. Kishida also criticized Russia for its annexation of Crimea in southern Ukraine and said, “Altering current conditions by force must never be acceptable. I hope the nations involved, including Russia, will make constructive efforts to resolve the situation.” With regard to Mr. Putin’s comment, Mr. Kishida stated, “Japan will continue making efforts for a world without nuclear weapons.”
