Deputy mayor of Hiroshima meets with Ukrainian parliamentarians

A group of members of the Supreme Council of Ukraine, the nation’s parliament, met with Deputy Mayor Koji Nishito at Hiroshima City Hall on April 27 to talk about recovery from nuclear destruction. Ukraine is the site of Chernobyl, where an accident occurred at a nuclear power plant while the nation was part of the Soviet Union.

In addition to members of parliament, the eight-member group from the Ukraine included high-ranking government officials. Victoria Voitsytska, a member of parliament and Secretary of the Energy Committee, said that even now, 29 years after the accident at Chernobyl, there are areas to which residents have not been able to return because of the radioactive contamination. Ms. Voitsytska said that Hiroshima’s recovery and prosperity inspired hope in the Ukraine.

In response Mr. Nishito stressed that Hiroshima had worked hard to recover by building a “city of peace.” He also called on the Ukrainians to lend their support to the effort to eliminate nuclear weapons.

The delegation from the Ukraine is in Japan from April 20 to April 30 as part of a training program sponsored by the Japan International Cooperation Agency. The group toured the area affected by the accident at the Fukushima No. 1 (Daiichi) nuclear power plant and on April 26 visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.
