Reaffirms nation’s denuclearization diplomacy

On June 25 Mexico’s ambassador to Japan paid his first visit to Hiroshima since his May 20 appointment to his post. Carlos Almada met with Mayor Kazumi Matsui at city hall and promised to strengthen Mexico’s cooperation with Hiroshima in the effort to eliminate nuclear weapons.

After visiting the Peace Memorial Museum in the morning Mr. Almada said, “This morning was for me a great, unforgettable experience. From a personal point of view, it made me confirm that human suffering on that scale is something that should never be repeated.” Referring to Mexico’s efforts toward denuclearization, he said he had reaffirmed that his homeland was doing the right thing. Mexico pushed for the effectuation of the Treaty of Tlatelalco, which prohibits the deployment and use of nuclear weapons in Central and South America.

Mayor Matsui welcomed the ambassador, saying, “In a sense Mexico takes the spirit of Hiroshima even more seriously than the Japanese government does.” The two men agreed to meet again at the Peace Memorial Ceremony conducted by the city on August 6.
