On June 25, the 12-member city council of Tsuwano in Shimane Prefecture approved a written statement opposing the security-related bill that would make possible the exercise of the right of collective defense.

The statement said that the security bill “in effect subverts Article 9 of the Constitution” and is “incompatible with democracy.” The statement also said that the international community expects Japan to pursue peace diplomacy and called for efforts to pass the bill to be halted and for Article 9 to be abided by.

Excluding the chair, six of the 11 council members voted in favor of the statement. In the near future copies will be sent to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Defense Minister Gen Nakatani, Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida, the speaker of the House of Representatives and the president of the House of Councillors.

In June of last year the council also approved a written statement opposing authorization of the execution of the right of collective defense.

In Hiroshima Prefecture, the Sera City Council approved a written statement opposing the security bill on June 18. Similar statements are also expected to be brought before the councils of Takehara and Shobara on the last day of their regular sessions.
