Officials for Volleyball Men’s World Cup visit Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

by Yu Kano, Staff Writer

Prior to the opening of this year’s FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup on September 8, Aleksandar Boricic, FIVB’s vice president, and other volleyball figures, visited the Peace Memorial Park in Naka Ward on September 7 and offered flowers at the Cenotaph for the A-bomb victims. With this Volleyball World Cup, which takes place every four years, coincidentally held in Hiroshima in the year marking the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing, the visit to the Peace Memorial Park was realized at FIVB’s request.

About 20 people including Kenji Kimura, president of FIVB Japan, and Kunihiro Shimizu, the captain of the Japanese national team, paid a visit to the park and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. At the museum, they took in the exhibits on the atomic bombing, such as a panoramic model which shows the devastation to the city center in the aftermath of the A-bomb attack. After offering flowers at the Cenotaph, they bowed deeply and prayed for the victims of the bombing. Mr. Boricic, who is from Serbia, said that being in Hiroshima was a somber experience, but that he was happy the volleyball tournament could take place in the now-peaceful city.

Matches of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup will be played at Hiroshima Green Arena in Naka Ward through September 13. Six nations will play a total of 15 matches in Hiroshima, including a match between Japan and Egypt on September 8.
