Former Environment Minister of Brazil visits Hiroshima, learns about A-bombing

Brazilian environmentalist Marina Silva visited Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima’s Naka Ward on October 15 and learned about the destruction caused by the atomic bombing. Formerly Brazil’s Minister of the Environment, Ms. Silva, 57, is known for her efforts to preserve the tropical rainforests of the Amazon.

After laying flowers at the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims, Ms. Silva was given a tour of the Peace Memorial Museum by Kenji Shiga, the facility’s director, during which she saw a model of the city center after its destruction and the personal possessions of mobilized students who were killed in the atomic bombing. She also heard an account of his A-bombing experiences from Hiroshima resident Sadao Yamamoto, 84.

She told reporters she had sensed the horrors of war and hoped to contribute to building peace based on what she had learned about the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Ms. Silva, who was awarded the internationally known Goldman Environmental Prize in 1996, served as Minister of the Environment from 2003 to 2008. She ran for president in 2014, finishing third out of 11 candidates. She is visiting Japan in conjunction with the 120th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Brazil.
