Gustavo Araoz, secretary general of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), visited Hiroshima on November 1 and toured the Atomic Bomb Dome and the surrounding area in the city’s Naka Ward accompanied by about 20 other members of the organization.

After a visit to the Peace Memorial Museum, Mr. Araoz laid flowers at the Cenotaph for A-bomb Victims. In front of the A-bomb Dome, the group heard a talk by Miyako Yano, 84, who was at her home in Ujina (now part of Minami Ward) at the time of the atomic bombing. Mr. Araoz said that every time he comes to Hiroshima he is shaken by the tragedy that occurred in the city 70 years ago. He also said he is impressed by the efforts of city residents to bring about peace by passing on accounts of their experiences.

Mr. Araoz also looked at a floating restaurant that has been relocated about 200 meters south of the A-bomb Dome on the Motoyasu River. Noting that second and third cases were quite possible, he pointed out the need for regulation in the future.
